You Have Heard Of “Kaizen” Or “Cani” But I Can’t Help Being A Kiasu!

You have heard of “Kaizen” and “Cani” but I can’t help being a “Kiasu”..

I am sure you have heard it all…I mean Kaizen and Cani…

Basically they mean the same thing: “Continuous and Neverending Improvements”

But I bet you have not heard “Kiasu” (not if you’re from Singapore or Malayasia) of this one because I am just one of them.

“Kiasu” (pronounced as “Kia’Soo” or “Kia’See”) according to Wikipedia is a Hokkien (a Chinese spoken variant) word for ‘extreme fear of losing’ (Chinese).

This word is so widely used by Singaporeans and Malaysians that it is incorporated into their English vocabulary (in the form of Singlish).

It is often used in describing the social attitudes of people, especially about South East Asian society and its values.

Its widespread use is often due to the fact that these attitudes are common—to not lose out in a highly competitive society (e.g. by accumulating too much food on a plate during buffet in case there will be no more later), or to the extent of parents imposing heavy study labour on their children in their wish to make them at the very top of all other students.

Growing up with this attitude, these students often become ambitious businesspeople, with the desire to be on top in wealth and prestige disregard with their true capabilities.

Such an attitude is often highly competitive, and its emphasis is to be above all other people, even if it means putting other people down.

But to be kiasu is not only to be competitive. Kiasu people are driven out of fear of losing probably more than the desire to succeed.

And I am afraid I have that as one of my traits. ;)

When I see others having firesales, I told myself “hey I am going to give something better”…

When I see others giving PLRs I told myself, “hey, I can do that too”

Search Engine Marketing Wars

Any search or query on a crawler-based search engine like Google or Yahoo results in display of thousands or millions of matching web sites. In most case however only the first ten are the most relevant matches found and are commonly displayed on the first results page.

It therefore becomes very obvious that any webmaster would target to keep his website in the first 10 results. One other reason for this being that any visitor is most likely to find his search in the first ten results. Moreover listing beyond the ten would take the website listing beyond the first results page and thus missing the visitor’s eye.

The following tips and tricks may help you the webmaster to get closer to the goal of getting on to that first 10 results.

Careful picking of Target Keywords

Visitors search by simple English words or phrases, keyword for you. Make sure each page on your website is optimized for a keyword relevant to its content. The target keywords should always be two or more words in length. A single word is never specific and you will be fighting the odds, wasting time.

Position Keywords properly

After picking the keywords they should be placed properly. First and the foremost in the page’s HTML tag. Then comes the page title, name the page title using the prioritized two or three phrases, for which you want the page to be found. Don’t elongate the title; keep it short and sweet, like newspaper headlines. Keep your keywords at a ‘’higher'’ level on the page, towards the top. They should appear in greater density in first one or two paragraphs.

Avoid usage of tables at the top of the page. This may result in pushing down the content; as a result the keywords will not appear ‘’higher'’ on the page. This happens because the tables are broken when the search engine searches. Also, please avoid using too much of java script. Search engines read java script first and then HTML, again pushing your content downwards.

Always keep relevant content

Content should always correspond to the keywords you optimize the page for. This will make sure the keywords are reflected in the content. Make sure the text is visible and do not use hidden text. If the text is not ‘’visible'’, search engine do not base their searches on it anymore. Expand you references or keywords; this will add legitimacy to you content.

Avoid using features that could be Search Engine Stumbling Blocks

Search engines do not recognize maps, frames and image based text. Keep it simple and keep it there, for better results.

HTML links and Link building

Create links using HTM or text, avoid using image links. Search engines cannot index images so they will no tread the links if they are image links. Always make sure that you link your website internal pages properly, this will result in the search engines finding more of your site. Link building is very important with relevant websites. Use text links to do this. This helps page ranking, page ranking rubs off, so please make sure that the links are relevant and make sense.

Finally, do not get obsessed over your website ranking. Despite following all the rules, if you still do not get ranked, you would have realized that search engines are not for your traffic. Try other ways instead of wasting your time.
